Craft: Bookworm

Have you ever heard of the summer slide? It is a term used to describe the loss of skills some kids experience during the summer months when school is not in session. Libraries host Summer Reading Programs to slow the summer slide.

Every year the Collaborative Summer Library Program announces a theme for all libraries to use if they choose. GLM loves hosting our annual Summer Reading Program and is excited about this year's theme, Imagine Your Story

To get kids motivated to read we have put together several crafts, games, books lists, and prizes! While we usually host events at the library, this year we are offering Remote Summer Reading. We invite everyone to participate.

The library is now open Monday-Saturday from 10-2 so come in and sign up for Summer Reading. The first 25 kids to sign up will receive a blue Summer Reading bag with materials for crafts.

Now here is the fun part, we are challenging everyone who participates to build a bookworm. The library has colorful cutouts ready for pick up that you can use to make your bookworm. For every book you read add a circle to your bookworm (don't forget to draw a face on the first circle). We want to see how long your bookworm gets so post pictures on Instagram, Twitter, and Facebook using the hashtag #glmbookworms, or send your pictures to librarian@gunterlibrary.com.

What about prizes? Read every day for a full week then come into the library for a reading ticket. Write your name and phone number on the ticket and at the end of the summer we will draw names to win amazing prizes! Last year local businesses donated fun gift bags and a few lucky winners walked away with a brand new Kindle Fire! Who will be our lucky winners this year? Will it be you?

We can't wait to host events in the library again. Until then, happy reading!
